20ft Insulated Cold Store — Sealed Machinery Aperture

SKU MG-20REEF-SHELL · Held at Johannesburg, Gauteng

A 20ft reefer body sold as an insulated shell: the original refrigeration machinery has been removed and the aperture closed with a welded, sealed steel blank, so what you buy is a heavily insulated, vapour-tight box rather than a cooling appliance. Around 100 mm of polyurethane in the walls, roof and doors, plus a stainless T-bar floor, keeps internal temperature far more stable than any dry container, which makes this the standard base for a customer-fitted split cooling unit, a biltong or curing room, a mushroom growing room or a dry ambient store for temperature-sensitive stock. Because there is no machinery, there is no three-phase requirement and no service liability at purchase. Our fabrication shop can quote a monoblock cold room unit, a personnel door, internal lighting or shelving as extras and fit them before dispatch. Delivered nationwide on kilometre-rated freight from the Johannesburg depot.

The shell is fabricated from Corten A weathering steel — a copper, chromium and nickel alloy that forms a tightly adherent oxide layer instead of the flaking scale you get on mild steel. That patina slows further corrosion, which is why a 25-year-old box can still be structurally sound while a painted mild-steel shed of the same age has perforated.

Side and end panels are 14-gauge (2.0mm) corrugated sheet welded to a rigid frame of rolled top and bottom rails with cast steel corner fittings on the ISO 1161 pattern. Roof panels are 2.0mm with an arch profile that shifts standing water toward the eaves. Flooring is 28mm marine-grade plywood over steel cross-members on nominal 300mm centres, rated for a 7 260 kg forklift axle load.

Expect surface oxidation on used grades: it is cosmetic. We reject units with through-plate pitting, cracked welds at the corner posts, or bowed rails, because those defects affect stacking strength and cannot be repaired economically in the field.
