20ft Cold Room Conversion — Insulated Personnel Door

SKU MG-20REEF-ROOM · Held at Johannesburg, Gauteng

A 20ft reefer converted in our Johannesburg workshop into a proper walk-in cold room for daily staff access, rather than a shipping box you have to swing full-height cargo doors on every time someone needs a crate. The build adds a hinged insulated personnel door with a stainless lever handle and an internal safety release so nobody can be shut in, a reinforced and sealed door frame that maintains the vapour barrier, a galvanised access step, cold-rated LED lighting on a switched circuit and a wall-mounted temperature display. The refrigeration set is retained, run-tested and holds set points from -20 degrees C to +15 degrees C on a 400 V three-phase supply, with roughly 27 m3 of usable space on the stainless T-bar floor after the fit-out. Typical buyers are butcheries, restaurants, farm stalls, florists and pharmacies who want a compliant cold room without building work. Shelving, a strip curtain and a data logger can be quoted as extras.

The shell is fabricated from Corten A weathering steel — a copper, chromium and nickel alloy that forms a tightly adherent oxide layer instead of the flaking scale you get on mild steel. That patina slows further corrosion, which is why a 25-year-old box can still be structurally sound while a painted mild-steel shed of the same age has perforated.

Side and end panels are 14-gauge (2.0mm) corrugated sheet welded to a rigid frame of rolled top and bottom rails with cast steel corner fittings on the ISO 1161 pattern. Roof panels are 2.0mm with an arch profile that shifts standing water toward the eaves. Flooring is 28mm marine-grade plywood over steel cross-members on nominal 300mm centres, rated for a 7 260 kg forklift axle load.

Expect surface oxidation on used grades: it is cosmetic. We reject units with through-plate pitting, cracked welds at the corner posts, or bowed rails, because those defects affect stacking strength and cannot be repaired economically in the field.
